You may remember a documentary of the same name from back in 2000 with narration from RuPaul, but now the legend of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker and her husband hits the big screen in fictional form in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Jessica Chastain takes the titular role alongside co-star Andrew Garfield who plays her husband Jim. Michael Showalter directs a screenplay from Abe Sylvia.
The official synopsis from Fox Searchlight states: “An intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and 80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. Tammy Faye was legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire.”
Scheduled for a September release in the UK, The Eyes of Tammy Faye looks set to embrace the camp legend of Tammy Faye who ultimately became revered as a gay icon.
