Stuart Woolfenden draws inspiration from classic noughties pop anthems and the emerging simultaneously nostalgia-soaked and progressive world of hyperpop for his latest single Like Old Times. The track fuses club beats, glitchy techno vocals, dancefloor-driven synths, and a theme of heartbreak – all fantastic ingredients for a contemporary banger.
Stuart tells us: “I was at my lowest when I wrote this song. I initially wrote it on the guitar and when I started producing it, it just became something much bigger. Now all I want to do is blast this song and dance to it with my friends which is not what I originally planned for it, now that painful part of my life has become something positive. That’s the beauty of creativity.”
Not to knock the guitar, but we are glad that Stuart ending up going with the slick electronic-based production of the track which marks his first original new song of 2022. Like Charli XCX, Kim Petras and Dorian Electra, it is lovely to hear Stuart dip into the world of hyperpop yet still deliver an earworming, nostalgic pop melody.
Stuart welcomed in 2022 with a remix of his previous single All Good in collaboration with DJ Ben Waller. Like Old Times joins his growing discography which features anthems like Cold Shoulder and Show It.
