Joe Hythe has captured our attention with previous tracks Dorian and Fast Car, and does so again with his latest single Ghost. The track, a melancholic synthpop number, plays with supernatural imagery whilst making a tongue-in-cheek allegory to the act of ghosting, The handsome Essex based queer star notes:
“This was one of those magical songs that came together at the piano in like fifteen minutes. I’d sat down to write yet another balled about a bad boy I was crushing on, but I was alone in the house and distracted by all the stuff I’d been reading about hauntings and the occult. I kept thinking about being ghosted by my crush, and being crushed on by some ghost. When I hit on the hooky chorus the door to the room swung open by itself (ominous creak and all) and I knew I had a winner. I also knew that was probably gonna be my best songwriting story too.”
Joe croons “My ghost could you keep me alive wasting, My youth away, till you give me a sign,” as he longs to hear from a potential suitor against shimmering synth-infused production. His vocals are emotive, with the singer-songwriter packing a heartfelt authenticity into the track which is produced by Joe and Richard Barr.
