From the moments the powering beats of Campground hit, it was clear to us that we had fallen for Willing’s recently-released Pure Romance EP. With classic pop-rock production, paired with Willing’s impressive vocal range, the track promises great things for the rest of the EP.
Classic synthpop feels omnipresent on the impressive Soft Touch which sees Willing deliver a soulful, emotive lyrical display against rippling electronic production. Sumptuous piano ballad Alibi showcases the artist’s vulnerability and further vocal prowess, whilst sensual dancefloor delight Venus In Virgo tempts us to the disco with its sharp grooves and big sing-a-long chorus complete with glorious vocoder accompaniment. It’s a real highlight that sees Willing almost veer into Prince-territory with iconic lines such as “She’s not your girl, she’s a woman of the world!” The ferocious tongue-in-cheek attitude of BACKLIT may then catch you off-guard which feels like Courtney Love has grabbed you to open mic night at a gay grunge biker bar – and we’re not against it.
Praise should also go to Wiling’s stunning artist bio, he notes: “Willing is a queercore recording artist whose sound and steeze is a game of of reconciling oppositions. The theatre and the club. The feminine and the fuckboy. The horny banger and the bruising ballad.”
Here’s to horny bangers and straight up wonderful queer pop. Connect with Willing here.
