Review: Drive Angry 3D

Drive Angry 3D tells the story of Milton (Nicolas Cage), a man escaped from hell to seek revenge on the Satanic Cult (lead by Billy Burke) who killed his daughter and plan to sacrifice his grand-daughter. He is pursued by The Accountant (William Fichtner), a supernatural being who attempts to return him to hell. Milton gets the help of young Piper (Amber Heard) and her ’68 Charger.

Drive Angry 3D sets out to be a violent, high octane, laugh-out-loud grindhouse inspired movie, and it completely delivers. The script from Patrick Lussier & Todd Farmer, the men who brought us the excellent My Bloody Valentine 3D, is action-packed and intentionally gimicky. With concise and stylish direction from Lussier. The film really embraces it’s so bad-it’s good nature with overly badass characters, over the top action and sex and hard rock soundtrack. The 3D is actually used very effectively, and makes a huge difference when the film is made with 3D technology as opposed to adding it in post-production.

The cast are all excellent and Nicolas Cage appears to have chosen wisely this time, but don’t worry he’s got another disaster coming in the form of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. His casting is perfect and Cage nails the role. However, he’s surpassed by the scene-stealing excellence of William Fichtner as the lovable demon, pursuing Cage. Amber Heard is on top form, I’ve seen many compare her to Megan Fox – but Heard is a much superior actress to Fox and better looking. Billy Burke, who has redeemed himself for the Twilight saga, hams it up as the malevolent cult leader.

This is truly great high octane fun, done extremely stylishly with a fun cast and excellent production team. Go see it!
