2011’s Film Treats

The Beaver
Stars: Mel Gibson, Anton Yelchin & Jodie Foster
Director: Jodie Foster
Release: 11/02/2011

Comedy-drama about a troubled toy company CEO, who adopts a beaver puppet as a means of better communication with his family.

Why we’re excited? Well Mel’s been going a little off the rails recently, so it should be interesting to see how this does at the box office. Given Gibson’s last performance in Edge of Darkness, we’re expecting the same quality for this. Highly original idea and Foster’s a very capable director.

Supposedly, based on Mel’s own habbits

Drive Angry 3D
Stars: Nicolas Cage, William Fincher, Tom Atkins, David Morse and Amber Heard.
Director: Patrick Lussier
Release: 25/02/2011

Nicolas Cage breaks out of hell, and ends up trying to prevent a satanic cult (who murdered his daughter) from murdering his grand-daughter at the next full moon.

Why we’re excited? Nicolas Cage goes from making awesome films to making terrible ones (See Bad Lieutenant and Kick Ass to Next and Knowing). We’re expecting Season of the Witch to be the poor one and Drive Angry to be the awesome one. From the looks of the trailer and Lussier’s earlier films this will be non stop horror action, guaranteed to keep the audience entertained. And William Fincher and Cage look badass!

Good Cage, we hope.

The Resident
Stars: Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lee Pace & Sir Christopher Lee
Director: Antti Jokinen
Release: 11/03/2011

A young Doctor moves into a new apartment, only to realise that her landlord is obsessed with her.

Why we’re excited? This is the first true new Hammer Horror Film. Let Me In was a remake and lacked the true spirit of the classic Hammer films. The Resident appears to have tapped into the psychological horror genre, that Hammer focussed on during the late 1950s and early 60s through such films as Paranoiac and The Nanny. From the trailer it looks like a decent start to the new Hammer legacy. Plus Sir Christopher Lee, an icon of Hammer has a small role as Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character’s grandfather.

Poor poster makes it seem like a 1990s TV Movie

The Wicker Tree
Stars: Graham McTavish, Brittania Nicol, Henry Garett, Honeysuckle Weeks, Clive Russell and Sir Christopher Lee
Director: Robin Hardy
Release; March/April 2011

Two young evangelical American’s come to Scotland to spread the word of God, however are lead into a trap by Sir Lachlan Morrison, to be part of the town’s May Day “tradition”.

Why we’re excited? This project has been in the pipeline for ten years, with everything coming in it’s way from – funding collapsing, stars being injured etc. With Lee originally playing the lead, but having to withdraw to back injuries, a lot of enthusiasm was lost on the project, however after seeing the trailer hopes have been raised. In no relation to the 2006 version of The Wicker Man, this can be seen as a spiritual sequel to the 1973 picture – containing similar themes and music.

“It’s time to keep your appointment with, The Wicker Man. Erm… I mean Tree.”

Scream 4
Stars: David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Hayden Panettiere and Adam Brody
Director: Wes Craven
Release: 15/04/2011

10 years have passed since the original atrocities and Syndey Prescott has written a book on the subject. However trouble soon follows.

Why we’re excited? The original Scream films were a phenomenon, reigniting the slasher genre and showed a clever twist on the horror genre. The original cast returning and a hot new cast is sure to breathe new life into the series. Most importantly – Courtney Cox is back! Courtney Cox!

I wonder who could be returning, in this subtle poster.

Thor
Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard and Idris Elba
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Release: 29/04/2011

Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Why we’re excited?  Amazing cast and we’re looking forward to seeing Chris Hemsworth get his big break. With classy director Branagh, and Shakespearian star Hopkins, this is likely to be a mature take on the super hero genre.

We’re not sure the silver armour and red cape will go down as well on Earth.

Born to Be a Star
Stars: Stephen Dorff, Christina Ricci and Don Johnson
Director: Tom Brady
Release: 13/05/2011

A small town nerd discovers his parents were once legendary porn stars in the 1970s. He soon leaves home in an attempt to become the biggest adult film star in the world.

Why we’re excited? Comedy films involving the porn industry are too hard to find (excuse the pun). We’re thinking Zack and Miri Make A Porno meets The House Bunny = good thing? Stephen Dorff as a porn star, is surely going to be entertaining for more reasons that one, and Christina Ricci doing comedy will make a nice change. Lack of footage and posters mean this crappy video is all you get.

EDIT: We found a pic. Wooo!

The Hangover: Part II
Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Liam Neeson and Juliette Lewis
Director: Todd Phillips
Release: 27/05/2011

The cast of the original film travel to Thailand for Stu’s wedding.

Why we’re excited? Chances are it’s going to be a rehash of the first movie, but with roles for Liam Neeson and Juliette Lewis and the return of Ken Jeong, this is sure to be one hell of a funny rehash! And former President Bill Clinton appearing, this sounds too good to be true. Fingers crossed!

Check out Alan on the left.

Beginners
Stars: Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Goran Visnjic and Melanie Laurent
Director Mike Mills
Release: 03/06/2011

A young man receives two stunning revelations from his 75 year old father – that he is terminally ill and that he is gay.

Why we’re excited? Plummer deserved an Oscar for his turn in The Last Station, so we’re hoping this does it for him. The story, based on director Mike Mills own experience, is sure to be a touching and heart felt story. And after all the smut we’ll be seeing in The Hangover II, a good cry will cleanse our souls.

Wonder how Ewan never knew sooner going by his Chris’s neck tie and terrier.

Captain America
Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Dominic Cooper, Stanley Tucci and Richard Armitage
Director: Joe Johnson
Release: 29/07/2011

In 1942, Steve Rogers is enlisted in a secretly military operation that leads to his transformation into super soldier, Captain America. He is called into action to stop Hitler’s Red Skull unit gaining control of a magical artefact known as the Tesseract.

Why we’re excited? It’s likely to be an ‘in your face’ smash of Americana, but who says that’s bad? Fantastic ensemble cast and what seems like a solid Marvel story, we’ll be waving our star spangled banners first in the queue for this one.

Standard movie star glare.

Rise of the Apes
Stars: James Franco, Freida Pinto, Tom Felton, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow and Brian Cox
Director: Rupert Wyatt
Release: 05/08/2011

A young scientist searching for the cure for Alzheimers discovers an ape, Caesar, who rapidly begins to evolve.

Why we’re excited? The original Planet of the Apes films were such a huge part of many a persons childhood and to have the series back with a more modern spin (animal testing) and a hot young cast (Franco and Pinto), hopefully this will reignite interest in the classic series and start a new one. *Roddy McDowall voice* Hail Caesar!

I believe when the film comes out, that man will be an ape

Cowboys and Aliens
Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell.
Director: Jon Favreau
Release: 12/08/2011

A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way

Why we’re excited? Well cowboys + aliens – surely this is good, no? How about this way – James Bond + Indiana Jones? Interesting subject matter with two genres that are very hot at the moment. And Daniel Craig in a cowboy outfit…

Dream House
Stars: Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz
Director: Jim Sheridan
Release: 30/09/2011

Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.

Why we’re excited? We’re thinking Amityville Horror on this one. This appears to be a tastefully done horror from director Jim Sheridan (Brothers, Get Rich or Die Tryin’) and with a promising cast, we’re excited to see the end result.

Immortals
Stars: Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Freida Pinto, Isabel Lucas and John Hurt
Director: Tarsem Singh
Release: 11/11/2011

Greek warrior Theseus battles against several Titans, with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance.

Why we’re excited? 2010’s Clash of the Titans failed on so many levels – the last minute transfer to 3D, underuse of several fantastic actors, lazy storyline… However on this we’ve got an interesting and original director – a fantastic young cast, filmed with special 3D technology and a lot of effort invested. We hope this will be the big screen break for Tudors star Henry Cavill. We’ve also been promised a lot of ‘tit’ acting and nudity from Stephen Dorff.
