New Zealand based alt pop rising talent Boy Virgo has been featured on the site a number of times with tracks such as Barbie Boy and Psycho, but now he combines forces with British producer OLD PUP for a new collaboration dubbed Blood and Guts.
The song, which arrives next week, blends hyperpop sounds with the emerging PC music world to create an unapologetic, angsty pop fusion. The track sees Boy Virgo and OLD PUP showcase their love for alternative-pop voices such as 100 gecs, UMRU and SOPHIE. Blood and Guts pairs Boy Virgo’s bold vocals blend against harsh industrial production, teasing a taster of the sound that we can expect to hear on their upcoming collaborative EP.
Boy Virgo labels this period his ‘Villain’ period: states “I’ve always been scared to be vulnerable, never writing about serious themes but I really wanted to change that with this song. It’s powerful, I’m angry, it’s a song filled with angst and drive. It’s almost a speech. It demands to be heard”. He actually wrote this song in one night after dealing with a ex romantic partner. He states “I had so much anger and frustration, when me and old pup were exploring instrumentals and he sent me this one, I knew it was the one. I wrote a full song so fast and belted it out so fast. It all felt so right. It was like a release of frustration mixed with my love for pop. It was therapeutic.”
