The passing of British music icon Marianne Faithfull this January was a devastating loss – the charismatic star leaving us with timeless songs such As Tears Go By, The Ballad of Lucy Jordan, and They Come at Night, with no genre left unexplored in her lengthy career. Now Marianne’s final recordings are set to be released, with new track Burning Moonlight, titling the four track EP which arrives June 6 via Decca. The project arrives on April 12 as a limited Record Store Day vinyl pressing for those looking to catch it ahead of its digital release.
Burning Moonlight captures Marianne’s raw later-day vocals, the recording session taking place after the musician’s fight to recover after her COVID battle. Elegant musical backing provides a delicate canvas for Faithfull’s commanding vocals to slink upon.
A press release quotes Marianne as reflecting: “It’s a good time to look back. It helps me to remember all the things I’ve done. I can’t say I’m a particularly nostalgic person, but I am enjoying this period of reflection.”
Marianne’s son Nicholas Dunbar shares: “As we grieve the loss of Marianne, we are pleased to announce the release of these songs which she worked on during the year before her death. Marianne lived to create and perform music – it was her driving force and she never stopped. Right up until the end she was looking forward to this release which now completes and celebrates her remarkable artistic career,”
Executive producer Andrew Batt explains how the project cleverly mirrors the esteemed performer’s career:“It was so unusual to start your career this way, so we decided to bring the music full circle. One side of the EP would be inspired by her debut pop LP Marianne Faithfull while the flip would honour her folk roots on Come My Way.” The EP is produced by Head, with Rob Ellis, Oscar Dunbar and Andrew Batt.
