We’ve let the UK’s highly anticipated Eurovision act sink in for a few days – and national pride aside, we really love it. News of James Newman’s selection began to trickle out on social media a couple of days before its official announcement and we weren’t sure how to feel. After listening to the British singer-songwriter’s track My Last Breath, we can safely say we are delighted.
Newman has had to fill the difficult task of being the first internal selection act since 2015’s much maligned act Electro Velvet. With the help of record label BMG, Newman was selected, signifying a new sense of credibility and effort in this attempt.
My Last Breath is penned by Newman, Ed Drewett, Adam Argyle, and Iain James. It’s a rousing mid-tempo ballad (and not in sort of soulless manner of previous BBC entries Bigger Than Us and Believe In Me) packed with an anthemic chorus and Newman’s distinctive vocal tone.
